"loom - Weaving the Social Fabric Through Dance" is a social ideology conceptualized by Brent Crampton and Jay Kline in Omaha, Nebraska, with the idea of creating various dance celebrations and artistic platforms to promote social progress.

Since March of 2006, loom has manifested as a series of dance events where people of all colors, orientations and ages have gathered in a peaceful assembly. From its monthly-first-Thursdays home-base of España Tapas Bar in Benson, to various one-offs at institutions such as the Joslyn Art Museum, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, & Love's Jazz & Art Center, loom has served as a positive social medium for bringing people together.

Various DJs and occasional guest musicians blend a colorful mix of world-inspired dance rhythms for what has been called "Omaha's longest running dance party" (City Weekly). Event theme's jump continents and timelines celebrating diversity across the board, including the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Brazil's Carnival festival, Nigeria's Fela Kuti, the buzz of Bollywood or dance arts from Salsa, Rueda, Bellydancing and Breakdancing.

On the community outreach level, loom has helped organize or support everything from race relation dialogues, fashion shows, film premiers and more. loom's also partnered with LA-based nonprofit, NextAid.org which finds sustainable and green ways to help children in Africa who are orphaned by AIDS.

With country sensation Dolly Parton gushing, “… he can sing me to sleep anytime,” it is evident that Brad Hoshaw is making his mark on the music world. Not only that, but Brad Hoshaw & the Seven Deadlies won 2010 Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Adult Alternative/Singer-Songwriter. Hoshaw began composing songs at the age of eight, first playing piano by ear, then studying alto/tenor/baritone saxophone through high school, until he eventually settled on the guitar as his instrument of choice. Nowadays, he moves listeners with his genuine songwriting and expressive performances that seduce you and make you cry all in one night.

With a name taken from a significant Lincoln, NE street, The Allendales treat their hometown with a twangin’ Americana sound fueled by rough guitars and alcohol. They “rely on solid songwriting and three and four part harmonies that bring their songs together tight and seamless, moving almost effortlessly between country, pop, and punk to create a sound that isn’t exactly new but is definitely warped enough to fit their unique vision.” They’ve opened for national touring acts such as The Mike McClure Band, The Mighty Short Bus, and The Drams.

The Killigans are a staple of the Lincoln, Nebraska music scene. Their Irish/punk/folk/country sound is devoured by fans and newcomers alike, and it is indeed irresistible. Their live performances have set the bar high, their songs have never let us down, and their annual St. Patrick's Day show has become a phenomenon of its own. They’ve supported bands such as Flogging Molly, the Aggrolites, Street Dogs, the Briggs, Time Again, Left Alone,and Flatfoot 56. They were even recently contacted by Universal Studio and will contribute their song “Lessons from the Empty Glass” to next year’s Robin Hood movie starring Russell Crowe. Oh, when the great are great.

Every Filter Kings performance is definitely a party with their rock/blues/funk sound and kickin’ guitar being the fuel for a crazy night. Formed in Buffalo, NY in October of 2000, The Filter Kings have been busy performing at numerous venues around the East coast. Tim McMahan calls it “the perfect soundtrack for a beer-drenched, white-knuckled bar fight, the kind of red-dirt honky-tonk music best played behind a chicken-wire fence, wearing a beat-up cowboy hat.” In June 2001, guitarist Mark Krurnowski won second place in the North American Rock Guitar competition held during the first annual WNED Buffalo Niagara Guitar Festival. The Filter Kings have had the opportunity to perform with such national acts as Blues Traveler, Blue Oyster Cult, Rick Springfield, James Cotton, Marcia Ball, Omar & The Howlers, Rik Emmett, Peter Frampton and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Mayday

Mayday is the creation of Ted Stevens, of Cursive and Lullaby For The Working Class notoriety. It's the uprising of Ted’s own material, and the band features a collective of members from other Omaha bands. Mayday’s sound is orchestral dreamy storytelling bliss with a rock base. CMJ called it "...A quiet but complex affair that showcases Stevens' unique storytelling skills alongside his compelling, Morrissey-like vocals..." Mayday’s lyrics, mood, and instrumentation are the subject of tons of positive chatter for the band, and there’s much more where that came from. Ted will perform his songs solo at Lincoln Calling.

Mitch Gettman

Mitch Gettman is still in high school and has already got the city of Omaha talking. He and his bandmates Andrew Malashock and Adam Gerber perfected their debut EP earlier this year and have been entertaining crowds ever since with original and cover songs, both of equal praise. maha City Weekly says, “His original songs show that Gettman is one of the most promising and impassioned musicians to come onto the crowded Omaha music scene in many years. Taking up residence on his set list are soaring epic ballads, catchy Smith’s era mope pop, and grunge influenced rock.” Gettman finished off 2009 with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Omaha Arts & Entertainment Awards. This nomination came in the form of votes from the Omaha music press, radio DJ’s, local music industry professionals, and promoters.

Brent Tactic has been running game in Kansas for a minute. After dominating the scene with his production partner for the mid part of the decade, Brent has been holding it down solo in the barbeque city torching dancefloors with any and every genre. More recently you could say that Brent is the go to guy to bring that added flavor to any party. His work with KC legend DJ SKU led to the inception of the most popular Hip-hop party in KC, YEAHHH BUDDY!!! Consisting of a themed night based around famous hip hop labels, producers, and MCs Brent has schooled the masses in the ways of The Dungen Family, Death Row, dancehall, and more. He also hosts Pop Rocks(90’s) with Lords of Tokyo great Bobby Keys and Risky Disco with KC don Bill Pile.

As a production due Brent and Ben Fuller joined forces as Tactic in 2002 after building successful careers individually in the Kansas scene. Tactic found common ground in bleeding a broad cross section of club culture. Their 4 turntable dj sets blurred the line between hip-hop, electronic, and club music to getting everyone’s ass shaking. Comfortable with any crowd that is ready to get down, Tactic has performed alongside everyone from Diplo and Spank Rock to Presfuse 73. Tactic has proven just as productive in the studio as they are in the club. Their remixes, re-edits, and blends have garnered international attention with plays on NYC’s East Village Radio and London’s prestigious KISS FM as well as getting rotation in the dj sets of Diplo, Tittsworth, Flosstradamus, and Eli Escobar. Their remix of Blaqstarr’s Superstar was released on Diplo’s Mad Decent label and has become a staple in the crates of many great djs including Nick Catchdubs. Recently they have been featured as remixers on EPs by Udachi and DZ.

If raising a daughter and holding down a 9 to 5 isn’t enough, Brent also runs a label called Think2wice (with ben too, who now lives in Portland). With seven releasesdone Think2wice has pulled remixes from Salva, Dan Daneeka, Ghosts on Tape, B. Rich, and Dubbel Dutch as well as featured artist Norrit. Look out for upcoming EPs from Potions and B-Stee.

They have shared the stage with such acts as Portugal. the Man, Cursive, Vampire Weekend, Say Anything, and The Fray, their drummer Oliver Morgan is also the drummer for Little Brazil, and their vocalist Megan Morgan also lends her chops to Saddle Creek band Ladyfinger. Indie pop/rock outfit Landing On The Moon have proven themselves time and time again that they are staples in today's music scene, and good ones at that. The band consists of siblings, a pair of spouses, and two friends that are like brothers to the rest, attributing to great chemistry, originality and harmony. Heartfelt songs and vocal dutiy switches are the foundation that makes this band stand out against the rest.

The album is a hopeful launch pad to nationwide touring and exposure for the band. What was once Melissa Geary's solo venture, Honeybee is now a collective of her close friends and high school sweetheart-turned husband - an awesome band with awesome music. It's an almost chilling twist on cute indie pop music and is completely and infectiously irresistible. Melodic vocals are supplemented by "guitar, organ, keyboard, electric drums, sand blocks, harmonica horn, wood floor creaks, things falling, and whatever Melissa can find to add a little something." Honeybee was listed as one of Omahype's Top 10 Local Albums of 2008.

Omaha's Bear County is pinpointed midwestern jam greatness with an "eclectic sound rooted in folk, classic country, blues, and the minimalist and cool movements. Bear Country’s sound palette is based upon the band’s focus to attain a dynamic and organic ensemble-like sound and is supported by a mix of voices ranging from breathy croons to throaty bellowed moans laying atop the amalgamation of minimal drums and percussion, stringed instruments and keyboards and their reverb-decay, and tempos that dip between boot-tappers and slow hip-swayers. Since meeting in high school gym class, Catherine Balta and Eric Scrivens have developed the punk/indie/rock of Once A Pawn into a stellar two-piece that rivals similar and larger bands. Catherine Balta as the band's vocalist/drummer belts melodies over her outrageous drumming skills while Eric Scrivens energetically rocks out on his guitar. The Queer Control Records-signed band is original and amazing and definitely one to watch. They have been touring around the west and midwest playing with a variety bands from all over the country. They've been featured on Lincolns local music website, Starcityscene.com, in Omahas publication, The Reader, Lincolns annual presentation of the best in local music, Scenefest, and their song Writing A Letter was listed at 50 on top 100 on KRNU, the University of Nebraska's radio station.

The Love Language's Stuart McLamb insists he doesn't seek chaos for art's sake -- it just seems to find him. "It's funny how that works," he says over cigarettes and coffee at a java joint in his band's hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. "I'll have these periods where just nothing is in my head. Then it's like a phoenix, coming out under stress. There's got to be easier ways to get the wheels turning."

But it's from that chaos that the Love Language arose. In 2006, McLamb was kicked out of his former band, garage rockers the Capulets, after he broke into their practice space in a drunken stupor to teach a girl to play drums and ended up trashing some gear. After a painful breakup with his girlfriend, his downward spiral culminated in a drinking binge of epic proportions. "When I came to, I was in a friend's apartment in handcuffs with my ankles bound, not knowing how I got there," says McLamb, 28. "That was a pretty ugly night, but it was also a turning point."

McLamb retreated to his parents' house and started recording what would become his debut, The Love Language (Bladen County), a casually stunning work of one-man-band lo-fi indie pop. McLamb's songs -- a mix of moody piano ballads and bouncy guitar rock -- are aching love letters to his ex that combine the emotional directness of Big Star with the raw immediacy of Guided by Voices.

Turbo Fruits

Reminiscent of an explosive 1970s garage rock band or rather “barn rock,” as they describe themselves, Turbo Fruits hail from Nashville, TN and embody everything we love about sweaty, rambunctious southern garage rock. These Nashville rockers have had quite a busy year. Nonstop touring and playing a strenuous 17 shows at SXSW, this is a band that we will surely hear a lot more about in the future.

Those Darlins are a garage country band from Murfreesboro, TN. The ladies went live in 2006 and attracted immediate attention for their rowdy, cheerfully sarcastic, and sometimes boozed-fueled show, and for their unique interplay of distinct personalities. While considered to be the next big thing associated to Nashville's rock scene, Those Darlins' curious mix of classic country and ragged garage rock makes them one of a kind, eliciting comparisons like, "The Carter Family meets The Black Lips." In 2009, the girls toured feverishly, playing 140 shows and sharing the stage with the likes of Dan Auerbach (of The Black Keys), Deer Tick, King Khan & BBQ Show, Wanda Jackson, Jon Spencer, and Dr. Dog. They made huge waves at SXSW, Bonnaroo, and Garage Fest.

2010 has already been full, with a Eastern headlining tour selling out many cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, St. Louis, Louisville, Brimingham, Nashville, and more. They have received widespread critical acclaim for their self-titled debut album, recorded in NYC and produced by Jeff Curtin, whose credits includeVampire Weekend's debut. Expect a 7" in the fall of 2010 and their sophomore full length at the top of 2011.

Union Line

The Union Line has been together since 2008, releasing their-self titled album independently that same year. They happen to be good friends with Local Natives and released a split single with them that same year. Since then they have been touring hard, preparing some new music and new releases.

The Union Line are going to receive comparisons to other Americana sounding indie rockers such as Modest Mouse, and Cold War Kids. Listen to the song “Goldmine,” and try to argue against them. Their sound is probably best described as pure Americana. Their songs tell stories through passionate song writing and detailed textures. These guys are no amateur musicians who just picked up their instruments and ran. The Union Line are writing songs that are miles ahead of pretty much everything you’re going to hear on the radio.

There is a pungent smell of sulphur blasting out of Lincoln, Nebraska. Thankfully, it’s not the end for all us sinners as predicted in the King James version of the Bible, but a barely controlled unleashing of some of the finest reverb-drenched rock ‘n’ roll to be heard in quite a while. With We Came in Peace, their fourth album in three years, Brimstone Howl have surpassed all expectation by turning in a record that galvanizes their seat-of-the-pants garage-punk stomp with razor-sharp lyrics, while production by Detroit’s Jim Diamond (think the White Stripes’ first two albums and the Gore Gore Girls’ latest) keeps it crisp without the loss of the band’s cavernous, gritty sound. The four-piece outfit’s description of their most recent effort as “weird fictional adventure stories, and beginner blues guitar lessons for mongoloids” barely scratches the surface of the strangeness beneath.

Taking its name from novelist Jack London’s 1904 seafaring adventure, Sea Wolf has evolved organically from its hermetic origins in Alex Brown Church’s living room into a muscular, full-bodied musical entity with passion to burn. After adopting the sobriquet, Church burst onto the
music scene in two-fisted fashion with the EP, Get to the River Before It Runs Too Low, and the subsequent full-length debut album, Leaves in the River. And now, Church’s singular vision has led to the creation of the eloquent and expansive new album White Water, White Bloom. It was
recorded at the Omaha studio of Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, M. Ward, Monsters of Folk), with Church handling vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, as well as some of the air organ and pump organ sounds that were such a big part of the sonic signature of the earlier records. Joining him were the three core members of the six-piece Sea Wolf touring lineup. The remaining slots were filled by Mogis on lead guitar and an assortment of other instruments, with his Bright Eyes cohort Nate Walcott. They arrived with a full set of song demos, providing a detailed blueprint for their subsequent expansion into widescreen anthems that reshape the classic aspects of traditional folk, folk rock and chamber pop—but these bucolic elements are intercut with aggressive bursts of raw emotion sharpened to a serrated edge—making for a rich, vibrant sound that is virtually unprecedented.

Her first stage performance came in a suburban Denver bar, where, at the tender age of 12, she played drums behind a bunch of bluesmen on open mic night. She first picked up the sticks in junior high band class, after bumrushing the kit to show the percussion students how to play. And her earliest instrument was saxophone, though she busted her own reeds to keep from practicing.

Unorthodox beginnings surely, but Cahoone has often plotted an unorthodox route on the way to Only As the Day Is Long, her quiet, country-noirish second album and Sub Pop debut, out March 18.

That path has also included a notable tenure as drummer for rock outfit and Sub Pop labelmates, Band of Horses (she plays on their acclaimed 2006 album, Everything All The Time), as well as a stint for the late indie band Carissa’s Weird.

But in 2006, Cahoone decided to step out from the cymbals and snare and focus on singing, songwriting, and guitar playing, skills she’d been honing for nearly 15 years on her own.

Now on Only As The Day Is Long, the airy gentleness of the arrangements is counterweighted by tension in the lyrics. “I know I’m safe for now, but I know the rest is on its way,” she sings on the title song. Time and again, characters mired in the present cast either skeptical or
hopeful eyes on the future: “It’s got to get better than this” (“Runnin’ Your Way”), “I wish this night would pass on by” (“Shitty Hotel”), “Time’s been moving too fast” (“You’re Not Broken”).

Patrick Park

Patrick Park is a Colorado native that grew up outside of Denver, surrounded by words and music. His mother is a published poet, and his father played folk and blues on the guitar around the house. “I’ve written songs since I was a kid,” he says. “There was nothing else that I really wanted to do—I was obsessed with it. I pretty much decided at the age of 13 or 14 that this was what I wanted to do.” Now with three EPs and two full lengths to his name, Patrick Park is set to release his strongest set of songs yet with the new lp.

Park released his first lp Loneliness Knows My Name in 2003 (Hollywood Records) and immediately hit the road, touring with My Morning Jacket, David Grey, Liz Phair, The Thrills, Rachel Yamagata, Granddaddy and more. As the album drew praise from critics, Patrick won over crowds show by show with his intimate, nuanced live performance.

After enduring the long process of getting off Hollywood, Patrick finally released Everyone’s in Everyone in 2007. Park worked with several producers including Dave Trumfio, (Built to Spill, Wilco), Rob Schapf (Elliott Smith, Beck) and Chris Stamey (Whiskeytown). The album was well received, making several year-end Best Of lists, lead off track, “ Life Is A Song” was featured as the final song on The O.C, and viewed by over eight million people and the second single “Here We Are” was one of Stereogum’s most downloaded tracks of 2007.

Lincoln Calling 2010

Well, it’s that time of year once again. Planning for Lincoln Calling 2010 is in full swing and we wanted to let everyone in on our plans so far with more details to come in the coming weeks.

First off, here are a couple quick notes on this year’s festivities. For the first time, we’ve taken the step of finding some sponsors to help with being able to bring in some bigger touring acts. So far we’ve secured close to 40 acts, with about half the lineup secured. The goal is to have all the lineup slots filled by September 1, but to help with visibility and exposure, we wanted to list off who is confirmed to play so far along with some other details of what will happen this year during the event.

We will kick off Lincoln Calling on Tuesday, Sept. 28 with the third volume of Kinetic Brew’s Homegrown Music Festival, this chapter focusing on local music videos. A Facebook group is available for additional information, specifically for bands seeking directors and directors seeking bands. The idea is to pair one of each to work on a music video together and at this event (at the Bourbon Theatre) we will show the finished products.
There has already been a lot of interest in this facet of the festival, but there’s always room for more. Feel free to hop on the discussion boards if you are a band in need of a director or vice versa.

Come September 29, the live music will start at nine venues around town including the Bourbon Theatre, Duffys Tavern, the Zoo Bar, 12th St Pub, The Alley, Marz Bar, Fat Toad, the Bricktop, the Black Market and Tavern on The Square.
